Photography Student Trying Something Different

I was in one of my classes early last year and our teacher used part of the session to show us how to use a scanner for photography, telling us that there was more to photography than just using a camera. A few months later, on my holiday, I decided to try my luck with my years-old scanner and see what I could come up with. I experimented with red ribbon I had bought for another photoshoot, and loved the results. I've just bought a new scanner, and I can't wait to see what I can do when I have some time.

Who needs a visa? And which one?

Not everyone needs a visa to enter France. Read the following section to find out which rules will apply to you. Also be sure to check out the official links provided for up-to-date information.

Citizen of one of EU/EEA countries (i.e. all 25 European Union member countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) do not need a visa for France.

Non-EU/EEA citizens need a visa to enter France, unless there exists a special agreement between France and your home country. These include: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, United States, Uruguay, Vatican and Venezuela. Citizens of these countries can stay for up to 3 months without a visa.

Before coming, however, check whether there are no changes. Up-to-date information on entry requirements regarding your nationality and/or residence is available on the official website of the French Ministry of Interior: www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/venir/visas (in French, English and Spanish).
Visas

Visas are valid for the length of time stated on them, starting on the date of arrival in France. There are very big differences between visas, so make sure you know what you want (purpose and length of stay) before applying for one. It might be very difficult, or even impossible to change a visa once you are in France. For example, you cannot enter France with a short-stay visa and then apply to stay longer. Neither can you change the status of your visa (i.e. change your status from student to employee) without first returning to your country of residence and obtaining the new appropriate visa. Also, it is not possible to ask a friend at home to obtain a visa for you once you're in France. In any case, you have to get out of the Schengen Area in order to apply for a new type of visa, so plan accordingly.

The Shengen Area refers to the treaty which enables free circulation of residents within these countries. Signatory states to the treaty currently are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Portugal, and the name itself is the place in Luxemburg, where the treaty was signed in 1985.

The main kinds of visa are:
Short-stay visa (visa de court séjour)
Valid for a maximum of 3 months. A visa granted by one of Schengen Area countries (for example, Germany) is valid in all other member countries and authorises its holder to circulate freely within Schengen area. This means that traveling within the Schengen Area is legally the same as traveling within France and thus you can make as many entries to France as you wish during the validity of your visa, as long as you do not leave the Schengen Area. If you intend to leave and re-entry the Schengen Area (for example visiting the U.K., which is not a signatory state to the treaty), you have to ask for a multiple-entry short term visa!
Long-stay visa (visa de long séjour)
A long-stay visa is valid for 3-6 months. After arriving in France you need to apply for a temporary stay permit (Carte de séjour temporaire) which will describe your status in France: visitor ( visiteur), student (étudiant), private or family purposes (vie privée et familiale), employee (salarié), etc.
Temporary long-stay visa (Visa long séjour temporaire de six mois)
This visa is valid for stays up to 6 months, but you do not need to apply for temporary stay permit ( Carte de séjour temporaire). You cannot remain in France past the visa validity date.
Short-stay 'student-examination' visa (Etudiant-concours)
This visa is for students whose enrollment into a academic institution is conditional on an examination in France. If the enrolment is approved after a successful entry exam, you then have to apply for temporary stay permit ( Carte de séjour temporaire).
Circulation visa (Visa de circulation)
This visa is valid from one to five years and allows stays in France up to 3 months every six months.
Transit visa (visa de transit aéroportuaire)
Nationals of some countries transiting France from one country to another must present this kind of visa. Be aware, processing times can be long, so apply well in advance.
Formalities for visa applications

Visas are never issued in France, so they must be applied for in your home or another country. If you are required to have a visa, do not attempt to enter France as you are likely to be refused entry. Generally, you should apply for your visa 8-12 weeks before your planned date of arrival in France - check with the issuing authorities (such as your local French Embassy or Consulate) for likely delays.

Long-stay and other specific visas are normally issued in your country of residence. A short-stay visa can be issued by any Schengen country (in principle, you should get the visa from the authorities of the main destination country).

Up-to-date information about visa requirements is available on the official website of the French Ministry of Interior: www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/venir/visas (in French, English and Spanish). The site is well organised. Based on the country of residency, your nationality and length and purpose of stay it gives all important information, such as:
Visas requirments, types and issuing conditions (such as valid passport, health insurance, proof of sufficient sources, proof of preliminary entry to the education institution in case of students, etc.)
documentation required for an application and where to apply (with address and phone/fax numbers), which is usually the Consular section of the French Embassy in the country of residence

Visas:

I needed visas for five countries: Russia (double-entry), Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan and Usbekistan (double-entry). As Veronika lives in Vienna, she could easily go to the embassies to get all the visas for us.
For Russia and Kazakstan we needed a LOI (letter of invitation). Single entry Kazakh visa is available without LOI, but we needed double entry.
The business visa invitation for Russia we got from a travel agency in Vienna, as well as the touris visa invitation for Kazakhstan. For Kazakhstan it was necessary to book a hotel accomodation for at least three nights to get the visa support (for two months).

Abigail is studying at the University of Nottingham. She became a prostitute after getting into debt.

Financial difficulties and being a student have always been intrinsically linked.

Most students will take extra loans or get a part-time job. Abigail, 20, decided when things got desperate that she would have sex for money.

"It was always something I'd considered from a young age, when I was about 15 or 16, I never really thought it was anything particularly bad...

"I was running desperately low on money and food so that was a big booster in helping me take the step in making that phone call."

The phone call was to an escort agency who set Abigail up with her first client.

"My first job was very enjoyable it was with someone who was very nice and that led me to think it would be quite exciting as a job."
Abigail's second job opened her eyes to the dangers of what she had entered into.

"He was taking cocaine and there was evidence that there had been a fight in the flat. There was blood on the money and a broken statue on the floor.

"He tried to strangle me a couple of times while we were in bed together. I felt in danger at the time...

"I just thought well, there's going to be bad jobs, there's going to be good jobs. There was no point quitting because of one bad punter."
Boyfriend

Abigail now sets up appointments by herself, advertising in local papers and on the Internet.

She rents an apartment with another girl and makes on average between £700-800 a week, working 10am - 3pm.

She also has a boyfriend.

"I don't see it as intimacy, I see it as a job. I'm providing a service, I put on an act [and] it's over within 20 minutes...

"I've been with [my partner] a long time, he doesn't mind at all. It's very different being with someone you love and someone that's paying you."

Student's future is orange

A cash-strapped college student in China paid his course fees and living expenses - with five tonnes of oranges.

Wu Xiaobin drove two truckloads of mandarin oranges more than 130 miles from his home on a farm in Quzhou to his college in Hangzhou.

He decided to try to sell the oranges as he couldn't otherwise afford to continue his studies at Zhejiang University of Media and Communications.

"This year my hometown had a good harvest of mandarin oranges, but due to the economic downturn and rumours of orange parasite infections, few sales could be made," said Wu.

"I spent the whole winter vacation helping my father try to sell the oranges but with little success."

Instead, his father gave him a third of their farm's 15 tonne orange harvest for him to try and sell in Hangzhou to pay for his studies.

And, thanks to local media covering his story, he sold all of the oranges within an hour of his trucks arriving on campus.

Companies bought boxes of oranges for their staff to support Wu and local families also came to buy fruit to help him stay on at college.

When most 17-year-old girls are reading magazines and discussing which teen idol is the cutest, Li Boynton is traveling cross country to win thousands of dollars in scholarships for her scientific achievement.

Boynton hails from Bellaire High School in Houston, Texas. Her mother has a background in biochemistry and her father is an engineer. No surprise that Boynton has an interest in science, and excels at all things academic.

When she was taking freshman level biology, her teacher Anna Loonam was blown away. The first thing she noticed about this reserved teenager was the drawings that Boynton turned in with her lab reports. “She has a passion for science that is paired with an artistic ability. Her lab diagrams were fantastic.” In addition to taking advanced placement science and art classes, and attending the renowned Glassel School of Art, Boynton also contributed to the school paper as a writer, and is now editor.

Her mother said “I’m just happy for whatever she decides to do and glad that she did so well this year.” By doing well, she means winning the Intel Foundation’s Young Scientist Award worth $50,000.

Boynton’s project titled “The use of bioluminescent bacteria to detect environmental contaminants” explored using a bacterium to detect toxins in water. Interest in this topic stemmed from a previous project on biosensors used in public health issues in Africa. Boynton’s project showed that the bacterium V. fischeri is ideal for use because not only is it abundant, easy to grow, and not dangerous, but also it shows contamination within 30-60 minutes.

The road to success was long and arduous for Boynton and her project. After working for months at home and in labs at Rice University’s department of biochemistry, she had to compete at several levels before making it to the international level. Boynton’s mother explained that while Boynton dedicated a majority of her time to competing in the fair, it still was a challenge and major time commitment. But she did it. Boynton traveled from Houston in the end of March to San Antonio to compete in the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair, hosted by UTSA. A highly competitive atmosphere, the fair catered to 1200 students like Boynton from all across Texas.

Boynton didn’t leave San Antonio empty-handed. She won First Place in the senior division for environmental sciences. As a winner at the state level, she was eligible both to attend the Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy, a residential summer camp, and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Held in Reno, Nev. for 2009, ISEF is a full week of science-related experiences for the 1500 participants. Competing is only one item on the itinerary; there are excursions to local science and engineering attractions as well as plenty of opportunities for like-minded students to meet and socialize.

Boynton’s mother and her former biology teacher, Anna Loonam accompanied Boynton to ISEF. Boynton told them not to expect too much of her, but Loonam joked that she expected nothing less than the top prize. As her prizes piled up, the joke became a reality. For the second year in a row, three girls won the grand Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards, and Li Boynton was one of them.

The adventure is not over for Boynton. For a week in June she will participate in the Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy, a weeklong summer camp awarded to winners at the state science fair. The residential camp is hosted at the UTSA Main Campus and exposes students to a variety of science topics through hands-on projects and discussion. The theme for this second annual camp explores extraterrestrial life from the basic elements to the possibilities, and includes multiple scientific disciplines.

Although excited for the camp and future experiences, Boynton says that she’s just trying to take one thing at a time, and for this high school junior, that means tackling the SAT.
